Dr. Andy Hopper

Biography

Sir Andy Hopper is a computer technologist and entrepreneur whose interests include computer data systems and the use of digital technologies to ensure the well-being of the planet. He is dedicated to establishing digital commons and innovations for societal utilities and is focused on implementing innovative business models to achieve these goals. Andy Hopper has pursued careers in both industrial and academic contexts simultaneously. In the industrial realm, he co-founded a dozen companies and floated them on stock markets, serving as the CEO of an industrial research laboratory. Academically, he was the Head of the Department of Computer Science and Technology from 2004 to 2018 and served as a Trustee of the University of Cambridge from 2011 to 2014. He received his BSc degree from University College Swansea in 1974 and earned his PhD from the University of Cambridge in 1978. Hopper is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering since 1996 and of the Royal Society since 2006, where he served as Vice-President and Treasurer from 2017 to 2023. He was President of the Institution of Engineering Technology from 2012 to 2013 and has been honored with the Royal Academy of Engineering MacRobert Award in 2013 and the Royal Society Bakerian Medal in 2017. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2007 and was knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours in 2021.
