Biography

Andy Pitman is a climate scientist based at the Climate Change Research Centre at the University of New South Wales. He specializes in land surface processes representation in global and regional climate models, focusing on the limitations of these models in representing key land processes and the implications of these limitations on the reliability of carbon and water projections within the Earth System. He is also interested in the robustness of global and regional model projections, as well as the appropriate use of models at various scales. Pitman has begun working on risk assessment processes related to future climate projections and has collaborated with a range of stakeholders to prevent the misuse of climate projections by operationalizing them to build services that link businesses with relevant information about available models. He serves as the Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes and is actively involved in various national committees, including the Australian Academy of Science, where he contributes to the strategic planning of Earth System Science. Additionally, he is a non-executive director of Risk Frontiers, which focuses on insurance-related risk.
