Biography

Professor Andy Tao specializes in Chemical Biology and Analytical Chemistry. His research group focuses on the development and applications of biological mass spectrometry and functional proteomics. The lab examines changes in proteins and modifications within cells under various physiological conditions, providing insights into cellular and molecular mechanisms that are not attainable through traditional biological studies which typically analyze individual biomolecules in detail. Functional proteomics presents a promising avenue for discovering diagnostic and prognostic protein markers as well as detecting new therapeutic targets, highlighting its role as a potent tool for enhancing our understanding of fundamental biological processes and mechanisms. The success of these endeavors is contingent upon the development of robust, highly sensitive, and specific methods to identify and quantify important proteins and their specific modifications. Current projects in the Tao Group include molecular signaling in cancer cells via phosphoproteomics and the identification of biomarkers for the early detection of diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's disease.
