Biography

Professor Mehta received his B.Tech. from the Institute of Chemical Technology in Mumbai and his Ph.D. from Texas A&M University. He completed postdoctoral training at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla. Professor Mehta joined the University of Illinois faculty in Fall 2019. His research interests are in synthetic biology, synthetic immunology, and chemical biology. Key areas of focus include directed evolution for synthetic immunology to combat emerging pathogens and understanding chloroplast evolution through engineered endosymbiosis. His lab develops novel translational platforms for human health by using evolutionary observations to design approaches that address fundamental molecular questions in biological systems. Additionally, he works on systems that engineer artificial photosynthetic life forms and develop strategies to target cancer selectively.
