Biography

Angela Bartholomew is an Assistant Professor of Modern & Contemporary Art History at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. She received her PhD in 2021 with a dissertation entitled 'Disruptive Attitudes: Artists Counter Art Exhibiting Low Countries (1985-1991)'. Her research interests focus on the factors that shape the production and presentation of art, particularly the conditions surrounding art exhibitions in the 1980s and 1990s. Her NWO-funded PhD research explored pivotal contemporary art exhibitions in mid-1980s Flanders and the Netherlands, analyzing strategies that artists employed to take control of the conditions that shaped the appearance and reception of their work. Bartholomew's teaching includes courses at both the BA and MA levels, such as Current Debates in Art & Culture and Methods & Theories in Art History. She has also coordinated the MA Contemporary Art History Program and currently serves as co-coordinator for the MA Curating Arts & Culture. Bartholomew actively engages in various ancillary activities including leadership roles in art organizations, reflecting her commitment to the arts and culture community.
