Biography

Professor Angela Casini works at the intersection of inorganic, bioinorganic, and medicinal chemistry, focusing on the role of metal ions in biological systems and the mechanisms of action of metal-based drugs. Her research program includes designing metal compounds to target selected biomolecules, such as proteins and nucleic acids, while optimizing these compounds for metal-templated reactions in aqueous environments that could enable catalysis in living systems. Additionally, she explores novel applications of metal compounds and supramolecular coordination complexes in chemical biology and drug delivery. Originally from Italy, Professor Casini completed her PhD in Chemistry at the University of Florence in 2004, after which she was a senior scientist at EPFL in Switzerland, supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation. She served as an assistant professor at the University of Groningen from 2011 to 2015, holding a Rosalind Franklin Fellowship, and subsequently was a professor at Cardiff University until 2019, when she took her current position as Chair of Medicinal Bioinorganic Chemistry at the Technical University of Munich (TUM).
