Dr. Angela Esterhammer

Biography

Angela Esterhammer works in the areas of British, German, and European Romanticism, focusing on nineteenth-century culture, with perspectives that emphasize performativity and performance. Her books include "Creating States" (1994), "Romantic Performative" (2000), and "Romanticism Improvisation, 1750-1850" (2008), the latter exploring the role of poetic improvisers in the culture of the Romantic era. Her recent work, "Print Performance 1820s: Improvisation, Speculation, Identity" (2020), investigates experimental uses of textual, visual, and performative media. Esterhammer has served as a founding member of the North American Society for the Study of Romanticism and previously held a Distinguished University Professorship at Western University. Her publications include edited volumes on various themes in Romantic literature and numerous articles addressing Romantic poetry and fiction.
