Biography

Angela Hoffman is an Associate Professor in English Linguistics at Uppsala University. She holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities, attained in 1999, as well as an MA in English from the University of Kansas in 1988 and a BA in English Teaching from Bethany College, Lindsborg, Kansas, in 1984. Hoffman's research primarily focuses on language contact between English and Swedish, examining community-level practices that influence language shift and ideology, as well as postvernacularity. Her doctoral studies involved sociolinguistic fieldwork methods and archival studies investigating bilingual communities. She utilizes discourse analysis alongside these methods to explore the use of Swedish as a heritage language in U.S. contexts, particularly among Swedish immigrant communities from the 1800s. Currently, she is involved in co-editing a volume on historical sociolinguistic studies of language islands in the Americas. In addition to her research, Hoffman is actively engaged in teaching at the MA level, covering topics such as language variation, sociolinguistics, and academic writing. She has received several accolades for her teaching, including the Pedagogical Prize and the title of Distinguished Teacher at Uppsala University.
