Biography

Angela Mitchell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Texas A&M University, where she joined the faculty in 2019. Her research focuses on the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria, which is crucial for understanding antibiotic resistance. The outer membrane serves as a barrier, making gram-negative bacteria significantly more resistant to antibiotics compared to their gram-positive counterparts. Her laboratory aims to elucidate the mechanisms that regulate outer membrane maintenance and adaptation under stress, employing various genetics and biochemistry approaches. This includes investigating how changes in the outer membrane barrier influence bacterial pathogenesis and antibiotic resistance. Prior to her current position, Mitchell obtained a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2013 and completed her postdoctoral research at Princeton University in the Department of Molecular Biology. Mitchell is also actively involved in professional associations including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society for Microbiology, and the American Society for Virology.
