Dr. Angela Nickerson

Biography

Dr. Angela Nickerson is a Lecturer at the School of Psychology, UNSW Australia, and the Director of the Refugee Trauma Recovery Program. Her research focuses on understanding the psychological mechanisms that underpin refugee post-conflict mental health and developing effective interventions for traumatic stress reactions among refugees. Dr. Nickerson is particularly interested in the impact of policy on refugee mental health and the cross-cultural considerations of psychological processes. She has worked with numerous refugee post-conflict populations in Australia, Switzerland, the United States, and Timor Leste. Prior to her current position at UNSW, she conducted post-doctoral research at Harvard University and Boston University, investigating psychological responses to loss and trauma. As a practising clinical psychologist specializing in traumatic stress reactions, Dr. Nickerson is also involved in training therapists in the Master of Clinical Psychology program and lectures on anxiety, mood disorders, traumatic stress responses, refugee mental health, and cross-cultural considerations in mental health.
