Angela Russell is a Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of St John's College. Her research is centered on discovering new drug targets and understanding the underlying mechanisms to translate these findings into new clinical candidates. She has a successful track record of multidisciplinary research collaborations, focusing on identifying small molecules that can upregulate utrophin for the treatment of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) and developing new anti-cancer agents that stimulate endogenous cell populations in regenerative medicine. Angela has co-founded spin-out companies, including MuOx Ltd, which was acquired by Summit plc in November 2013, for the development of new small molecule utrophin modulators for DMD therapy, and OxStem Ltd, a company dedicated to translating research findings into small molecule manipulation of stem cells for regenerative medicine. OxStem Ltd has raised a record £16.9M to identify new classes of drugs that reprogram and stimulate existing endogenous cells for tissue repair in age-related conditions, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and heart failure. Angela maintains active teaching commitments and contributes to several prestigious research institutions, including the Oxford Stem Cell Institute (OSCI) and the British Heart Foundation Centre of Research Excellence (BHF CRE).
