Angela Russell is a Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Oxford, where she serves as a Bernard Taylor Fellow and Tutor in Organic Chemistry at St John's College. Her research focuses on the discovery of new drug targets and mechanisms, translating findings into new clinical candidates. She has successfully led multidisciplinary research collaborations, identifying small molecules to upregulate utrophin for the treatment of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) and developing new anti-cancer agents that stimulate endogenous cell populations in regenerative medicine. Angela co-founded several spin-out companies, including MuOx Ltd, which focuses on the development of small molecule utrophin modulators for DMD therapy, and OxStem Ltd, which aims to translate research findings on small molecule manipulation of stem cells into regenerative medicine. OxStem Ltd has raised a record £16.9 million to identify new classes of drugs that re-program and stimulate existing endogenous cells to repair tissues affected by age-related conditions, cancer, and heart failure. In addition to her research, Angela has active teaching commitments and contributes to the Oxford Stem Cell Institute, the British Heart Foundation Centre of Research Excellence, and the Cancer Research UK Oxford Centre, supporting various levels of research training.
