Dr. Angela Valenzuela

Biography

Angela Valenzuela is a Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy at the University of Texas at Austin, where she also holds a courtesy appointment in the Cultural Studies in Education Program within the Department of Curriculum & Instruction. She serves as the director of the University of Texas Center for Education Policy. Valenzuela has authored several influential works, including 'Subtractive Schooling: U.S. Mexican Youth Politics Caring' and 'Leaving Children "Texas-style" Accountability Fails Latino Youth'. As a Fulbright Scholar, Valenzuela taught at the College of Law at the University of Guanajuato in Mexico and has conducted research on immigration and human rights. Her teaching and research interests encompass sociology of education, policy in K-12 and higher education, urban education reform, and culturally relevant curricula. Valenzuela directs the National Latino Education Research Policy Project, which seeks to create teacher education pathways for Latino/a youth. She is also a member of the National Academy of Education and has held several editorial roles in education journals, emphasizing qualitative research in education and multicultural perspectives.
