Biography

As a feminist media artist working in a variety of forms, Angela Washko is committed to telling complex and unconventional stories that challenge existing narratives in media and provide unusual perspectives. Her interdisciplinary practice spans interventions in mainstream media, virtual environments, performance art, digital works, video art, documentary film, and video games. In 2012, she founded the Council on Gender Sensitivity Behavioral Awareness in World of Warcraft, an intervention and protest platform within the popular online video game. One of her notable projects, Game: Game, is a critical video game aimed at holding professional pickup artists accountable for their coercive and antifeminist practices. Washko's completed documentary film, Workhorse Queen, explores the impact of reality television on public understandings of gender, sexuality, aging, and community, earning numerous accolades at international film festivals and broadcast on platforms like STARZ and Amazon Prime. She is currently working on an interactive media art installation, Mother, Player, which will be featured in a solo exhibition at the Foundation for Art and Creative Technology in Liverpool, UK, in Fall 2024. Washko has received various prestigious awards and grants that underscore her contributions to contemporary art and social dialogue.
