Angeles Garcia Mayor is an Assistant Professor at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, Utrecht University. Her research integrates multidisciplinary knowledge from hydrology and ecology to study the interactions between structure and function of dryland ecosystems across spatiotemporal scales. This work addresses how these ecosystems respond to climatic and human pressures, as well as management actions. Her methodologies include a combination of modeling, observational studies, manipulative experiments, and field and lab measurements, augmented by aerial photographs. A key focus of her current research is on enhancing the ecological realism of dryland vegetation models and developing more coherent connections between modeling and field experiments. She is also interested in using her research to contribute to the establishment of early-warning indicators for desertification and to improve empirical testing for a better understanding of the mechanistic linkages between patterns and processes involved in sudden ecological changes. In her teaching role, she instructs courses in System Analysis for the Bachelor program in Global Sustainability Science, as well as Environmental System Analysis and Research Design for the Master program in Sustainable Development. Additionally, she is involved in the supervision of BSc, MSc, and PhD students.
