Dr. Angélique Willkie

Biography

Angélique Willkie is a multidisciplinary artist whose dance training began with a Master’s degree in Economics at McGill University. She graduated from the School of Toronto Dance Theatre and subsequently pursued a career in Europe for 25 years, performing with various dance companies and independent projects. Notable collaborations include work with Alain Platel/Les Ballets C. de la B., Jan Lauwers/Needcompany, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, and Helena Waldmann, as well as with the Belgian world-music group Zap Mama. Willkie is a sought-after contemporary technique teacher in the European professional circuit, having taught at festivals such as ImpulsTanz in Vienna and other prestigious institutions. In her pedagogical role, she coordinated education at the École Supérieure des Arts du Cirque in Brussels. Since resettling in Montreal in 2014, Angélique has remained active in the local professional community as a teacher, creator, and dramaturge. Her current research focuses on interdisciplinary artistic creation, European circus aesthetics, and personal dramaturgy, influenced by historical figures like Josephine Baker and contemporary artists like Phia Ménard. Angélique is also interested in the use of voice as a creative tool and performance instrument.
