Dr. Angus Kirkland

Biography

Angus Kirkland is a Professor in the Department of Materials at the University of Oxford. His research focuses on advanced electron microscopy techniques, particularly ultra-high resolution electron microscopy, and image processing. He is involved in the development of new approaches for quantitative microscopy, including the use of aberration-corrected electron optics and ptychographic imaging. Kirkland has contributed significantly to the field through the development of innovative detectors for imaging high energy electrons and addressing challenges in imaging radiation-sensitive materials. His work also includes collaborations on dynamic transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to better understand reaction processes at nanosecond timescales. Furthermore, he supervises projects involving artificial intelligence and deep learning as applied to large electron microscopy datasets, enhancing the capabilities in analyzing chemically sensitive imaging, particularly in pharmaceuticals. Angus Kirkland holds an influential role as Science Director at the Rosalind Franklin Institute and is affiliated with the Physical Sciences Imaging Centre at the Diamond Lightsource, engaging in a wide range of pioneering research projects.
