Ani (Anahit) Penesyan obtained her PhD from the University of New South Wales, where she worked on a project exploring marine eukaryote-associated microbes, production of bioactive metabolites, and microbial biofilms under the supervision of Professor Staffan Kjelleberg. After her PhD, she joined Professor Ian Paulsen's research group at Macquarie University in 2011, focusing on antibiotic resistance in the hospital pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii. Between 2011 and 2014, she served as an Australian Research Council Super Science Fellow, collaborating on research projects aimed at exploring microbial adaptations and host-microorganism interactions in cystic fibrosis using -omics approaches. Following the completion of this project, Dr. Penesyan returned to Professor Paulsen's lab in 2017 to lead research on microbial biofilms, specifically mechanisms underlying resistance to environmental stressors and antibiotics. After 1.5 years at UNSW, she rejoined Macquarie University in 2021 as a Research Fellow at the ARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology. Currently, she is also associated with SRI International in the USA as a curator for the BioCyc online resource. Dr. Penesyan is recognized for her expertise in using genomics and bioinformatics to understand microbial interactions, antibiotic resistance, and microbial ecology.
