Anind K. Dey is the Dean of the Information School and a Professor at the University of Washington. He holds adjunct professorships in both the Department of Human-Centered Design Engineering and the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering. Anind's renowned early work in context-aware computing has been pivotal in modern computing, focusing on the computational processes that are aware of the context to operate and adapt appropriately. His research interests lie at the intersection of human-computer interaction, machine learning, and ubiquitous computing. In recent years, Anind has concentrated on passively collecting large amounts of data from how people interact with phones and objects, using this data to produce detection and classification models of human behaviors. He applies a human-centered, problem-based approach in collaboration with a diverse group of domain experts, particularly in areas such as substance abuse, mental health, transportation needs, smart spaces, sustainability, and education. Anind was inducted into the ACM SIGCHI Academy for his significant contributions to the field of human-computer interaction in 2015 and became an ACM Fellow in 2021. He is actively recruiting new students for Autumn 2025.
