Anita McAlister received a BMUS in Performance from the University of Toronto and a MMus in Solo Performance and Literature from the University of Western Ontario. An active freelancer in the Toronto area, she has had a varied career performing with the Toronto Symphony, National Ballet Orchestra, and Canadian Opera Company. McAlister is a member of Esprit Orchestra and ARRAYMUSIC Ensemble, and has had performances with the Hannaford Street Silver Band, and as a contracted member of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony and Stratford Festival. She has toured as Principal Trumpet for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Orchestra and performed in numerous theatre productions such as Phantom of the Opera. As a student, she studied with Canadian Brass at Banff and became a member of the Great Lakes Brass Quintet and Composers Brass, performing with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Brass Quintet. McAlister won the National Competitive Festival of Music at age 18 and has performed as a soloist with several orchestras. She has taught at the Interprovincial Music Camp, Scarborough Board of Education Music Camp, and Mount Allison Summer Music Program. Currently, she is a faculty member at the University of Toronto, teaching trumpet and coaching chamber music as well as music education classes. Dedicated to the development of brass education, she is the Director of the Hannaford Youth Program, where she conducts Junior and Community Youth Bands.
