Biography

Anja Arnhold is an Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Alberta, having previously served as an Assistant Professor from 2016 to 2022. She completed her Ph.D. at Goethe-University Frankfurt in 2013 and holds an M.A. from the University of Potsdam, obtained in 2007. Her research primarily focuses on experimental phonology, with a particular interest in prosody and its role in expressing pragmatic distinctions within discourse. Anja's work emphasizes prosodic marking of information structure and includes studies on prosodic typology, where she has investigated languages such as Kalaallisut, Finnish, Yakut, Mandarin, and Inuktitut. Recently, she has been involved in projects such as ‘Speech prosody new vs. shared information in Canadian English’ and an SSHRC Insight Grant project focusing on linguistic complexity and prosodic-morpho-syntax interactions in English and Mandarin. Anja has received recognition for her teaching and mentorship, including the Faculty of Arts Excellence in Graduate Teaching and Mentorship Award in 2025, and is a member of the advisory board for Phonological Data & Analysis. Her notable publications include co-authored works in journals such as Applied Psycholinguistics and the International Journal of American Linguistics.
