Biography

Anja Bechmann is a professor in Media Studies and director of the interdisciplinary research center DATALAB - Center for Digital Social Research at Aarhus University, Denmark. Her research examines digital communication and collective behavior through large-scale data collection and the application of machine learning techniques. She is the principal investigator for the Independent Research Fund Denmark project titled 'Influence: A Large-Scale Study of Infrastructures Influencing National Populations with a Focus on False Information.' Additionally, she serves as the Chief Investigator for the EU project NORDIS and is an executive board member of the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO). Bechmann's research has received funding from national and international research councils, including the Danish Council for Independent Research, the Swedish Research Council, and Horizon 2020. She supervises research focusing on communication, collective behavior, algorithmic spaces, and the influence of big tech platforms on democratic ideals. Bechmann's work is methodologically diverse, primarily utilizing computational social science and applied machine learning, combining various methods such as API data, data donation, and ethnographic surveys. She has also held external academic positions, including Guest Professor at the University of Antwerp.
