Biography

Anja Gunderloch graduated with Honours in Scottish Ethnology from the University of Edinburgh and completed her PhD on 'Cath Gabhra Family Ballads: A Study in Textual Relationships' in 1997. She has been a lecturer in the Department of Celtic at the University of Edinburgh since 2001, where she teaches courses on Gaelic literature and supervises various PhD and MSc research projects. Anja's research interests primarily lie in Scottish Gaelic poetry from the sixteenth century to the end of World War I, with a focus on Gaelic heroic ballads. She is particularly interested in how these ballads transitioned from being oral traditions to literary forms. Anja conducts research on the works of renowned Gaelic poets, especially Donnchadh Bàn Mac t-Saoir. Her work aims to bring out innovative aspects of poetry, examining how traditional and modern elements interweave within Gaelic literature. Anja is also looking into the language and culture of the Isle of Man as part of her research, developing connections with Irish and Scottish Gaelic materials.
