Dr. Anja Slawisch

Biography

Anja Slawisch is a Senior Lecturer in Greek Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh, specializing in Greek material culture and archaeology from the Geometric to Roman periods, with a particular focus on Ionia and Thrace during the 7th to 4th centuries BCE. She has extensive experience in research and teaching in classical archaeology, including undergraduate courses on Greek art and archaeology. Her research interests include cross-disciplinary synthetic analysis of archaeological and textual sources, diachronic approaches to mobility, resilience, and cultural change, as well as funerary practices in Greek and Roman contexts. She has supervised several PhD students on topics ranging from iconography to economic practices in the Greek Mediterranean. Anja's ongoing projects include a major book project on 'A Cultural History of Archaic Classical Ionia,' and she has been awarded a Major Research Fellowship from the Leverhulme Trust for 2024-2027. She is also a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute and a fellow of the Higher Education Academy and the Society of Antiquaries.
