Biography

Anjalé D. Welton’s scholarship examines educational leaders' dialogue to address race and racism in school communities. Her research considers the role of student and community voice, leadership, activism, and education reform. Welton has professional experience coordinating leadership empowerment programs for urban youth and facilitating urban education teacher preparation programs in large urban districts. She is committed to providing professional development for educational leaders on issues of race and equity. Her recent co-authored book with Sarah Diem, Anti-racist Educational Leadership Policy: Addressing Racism in Public Education, challenges school leaders to question the racial implications of policies they design and implement. In 2020, the book received the Taylor Francis “Outstanding New Textbook” Award in Behavioral Sciences Education, followed by the AESA Critic’s Choice Book Award in 2021. Her existing publications contribute significantly to fields concerning racial justice, educational leadership, and institutional change related to racial equity in educational settings.
