Biography

Ankit Sabharwal has broad research experience in the field of human zebrafish mitochondrial biology and genomics. He is focused on developing rare genetic disease models in zebrafish using new gene-editing tools for mitochondrial DNA and nuclear-encoded mitochondrial proteins. His research aims to design therapeutic interventions for various disorders. Sabharwal obtained his doctorate degree from the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology in India, where he was introduced to the field of rare genetic disorders and successfully resolved a novel medical case involving a rare mitochondrial disorder through the use of sequencing-based clinical assays. He completed his postdoctoral training at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, where he was involved in expanding the gene-editing toolbox to engineer mitochondrial DNA and establish disease models for mitochondrial disorders. Additionally, he served as the president of the research fellows association during his postdoctoral training at Mayo Clinic and was an active participant in education outreach and mindfulness activities within the community.
