Professor Dr. Ann Farnsworth Alvear

Biography

Ann Farnsworth-Alvear is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Pennsylvania. She serves as the Chair for Graduate Studies and is an Undergraduate Advisor for Latin American & Latinx Studies. Her research interests encompass Modern Latin America, Economic Social History, Gender Studies, Labor History, and issues related to Race in the Americas. Farnsworth-Alvear is the author of 'Dulcinea Factory: Myths, Morals, Men Women Colombia's Industrial Experiment, 1905-1960,' published by Duke University Press in 2000, which won the Allan Sharlin Prize from the Social Science History Association and the Bolton-Johnson Prize. Her recent endeavors focus on Platinum Mining in Colombian Chocó. She completed her Ph.D. at Duke University in 1994 and has taught various courses related to Latin American Studies, including topics on Coca, Cocaine, Feminism in the Americas, and Oral History. Additionally, her academic affiliations include Latin American Latinx Studies, Africana Studies, and Gender, Sexuality, Women's Studies.
