Biography

Ann Johns is a Distinguished Senior Lecturer in Art History at the University of Texas at Austin, specializing in Late Medieval and Early Renaissance Italian Art. She earned her PhD from the University of Texas at Austin and her research primarily focuses on medieval and Renaissance art and architecture, particularly the role of monasticism in the arts during this period. Johns has delivered talks and contributed essays on the politics of art in Siena and the significance of Cistercian architecture in late Medieval Italy. Over her career, she has taught a wide array of courses at UT Austin and Southwestern University, including introductory classes to Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque art history, Art Historical Methodology, as well as specialized seminars like 'Pope’s City: Vatican St. Peter’s,' 'New World / Old World Encounters: Visualizing Power and Glory,' and 'Losing Venice: Art and Sustainability.' For over 20 years, she has developed and taught online classes and served as program director for the Learning Tuscany program in Siena. Her commitment to teaching has been recognized with various awards, including the Regents Outstanding Teaching Award in 2011 and the College of Fine Arts Distinguished Teaching Award in 2012-2013. In 2018, she was honored with the President’s Associates Teaching Excellence Award for her contributions to education and the arts.
