Biography

Ann Komaromi is a Professor at the University of Toronto in the Centre for Comparative Literature. Her research primarily focuses on late Soviet culture, including samizdat (underground publishing) and dissidence in the USSR. Komaromi's articles theorize the formation of alternative publics and epistemologies of samizdat, engaging with specific texts and groups involved in these movements. She is particularly interested in the return of modernism and avant-garde nonconformist literary and art movements from the late twentieth century. Current projects include studies of dissident memoirs, archives, and the history of Jewish activism in Leningrad, as well as analyses of trash and used objects in post-war visual art museum exhibits.
