Ann graduated from the University of Reading with a BSc in Physics and Meteorology, later earning her PhD in Environmental Physics from the University of Nottingham. She also holds a Doctor of Science from UMIST. After spending three years in the USA researching the medical environment and the effects of sunlight on human health, she returned to the UK. Ann commenced her career at the University of Reading, focusing on atmospheric studies, before joining the University of Manchester as a lecturer in Physics. Currently, she is a Professor at the Centre for Atmospheric Sciences within the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. From 2011 to 2018, she served as Associate Dean for Graduate Education in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Ann’s research primarily explores the interface between atmospheric sciences and photobiology, particularly the synthesis of vitamin D from sunlight and its implications for health. Through collaborations with the Medical School, she investigates the effects of UV radiation on health by examining scattering radiation in ice crystals. Ann has held notable positions such as President of the Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage and currently leads a UV Working Group within the International Radiation Commission.
