Dr. Anna Beckers

Biography

Anna Beckers is a Professor of Private Law and Social Theory at the Faculty of Law at Maastricht University. Her research interests are in theoretical doctrinal approaches to central private law institutions, with a significant focus on social theory approaches to legal research, particularly social systems theory and science technology studies. She adopts a comparative approach to doctrinal work on private law, covering the core legal institutions of private law such as contract, tort, and corporation. Beckers explores the connections between private law, economic law, and transnational law. Her works have been published widely in multiple languages, including English, German, and French, and have appeared in esteemed books and peer-reviewed journals, such as the Common Market Law Review and the European Law Open. She has successfully participated in European grant competitions and was awarded prestigious fellowships, including the Max Weber Fellowship and the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Personal Fellowship. In 2022, she was awarded the European Research Council Starting Grant to lead the CHAINLAW project, focusing on responsive law for global value chains. Previously, she held positions as an Assistant Professor and an Associate Professor at Maastricht University and as a Max Weber Fellow at the European University Institute. Beckers earned her PhD from Maastricht University with cum laude distinction in 2014, with her thesis published by Hart Publishing. Additionally, she holds a law degree from the University of Frankfurt am Main.
