Dr. Anna Blom

Biography

Anna Blom is a Professor at Lund University in the Department of Translational Medicine, where she leads research focused on the regulation of the complement system in health and disease. Her research delves into the crucial role played by the complement system in innate immunity, specifically its function in protecting against infections and its contributions to the removal of dying cells. Additionally, her work investigates complement's involvement in cancer, particularly how it contributes to tumor development through pro-inflammatory properties. Blom's team is also engaged in studying the molecular mechanisms of breast cancer, prostate cancer, leukemias, and lymphomas, with an aim to improve diagnostic methods and provide new treatment ideas. Furthermore, she addresses the involvement of the complement system in rheumatic diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. Blom's interest extends to the strategies developed by bacterial pathogens to evade complement-mediated killing, as well as the intracellular roles of complement protein C3 in regulating genetic function and insulin secretion. Her research aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those focused on health innovation and research.
