Biography

Anna Grzymala-Busse is the Michelle Kevin Douglas Professor of International Studies in the Department of Political Science and Director of the Europe Center at Stanford University. She is also a Senior Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution by courtesy. Her research focuses on the historical development of state transformation, political parties, religion in politics, and post-communist politics. Her areas of interest include populism, informal institutions, and causal mechanisms. She is the author of four books: 'Redeeming Communist Past: Regeneration of Communist Successor Parties', 'Rebuilding Leviathan: Party Competition and State Development in Post-Communist Europe', 'Nations of God: Churches Use Moral Authority to Influence Politics', and 'Sacred Foundations: Religious and Medieval Roots of the European State'. Anna has received Carnegie and Guggenheim Fellowships for her work.
