Biography

Anna McCarthy is a Professor and the Director of Graduate Studies at New York University, specializing in media studies and media theory. Throughout her academic career, she has coedited the journal Social Text and currently edits Social Text Online. McCarthy's notable works include 'Ambient Television' (2001), which explored the cultural, commercial, and political uses of video screens in public spaces, and 'Citizen Machine' (2010), which examined how postwar institutions—including labor unions and philanthropies—utilized television programming as a governance tool. She has also coedited the anthology 'MediaSpace' (2004), which compiled insights from an international group of media scholars analyzing the spatial logics of various media objects. McCarthy's recent research delves into the context of Irish film and television amidst cultural transitions from theocracy to a secular state, and she is an accomplished fiction writer with stories published in several literary journals. Her academic qualifications include a BA from Wesleyan University and both an MA and PhD from Northwestern University.
