I'm a Filipino-Canadian Assistant Professor educated in the United States. I was born in Manila and relocated to Canada in anticipation of the 1997 changeover. I grew up in Burnaby, a district of Vancouver, and obtained my BA from Bryn Mawr College with a double major in English Literature and Creative Writing. After graduation, I became an English Language teacher in Vancouver and Calgary, which deepened my empathy towards the diverse challenges people face in their lives. I pursued my MA in TESL and developed interests in sociolinguistics, language learning, and its socio-political contexts. I completed my PhD at the University of Hawai’i Mānoa, where I focused on language diversity and its educational implications. I previously taught at the University of Hong Kong before joining the Department of Linguistics at the University of Illinois as an Assistant Professor of TESL and Sociolinguistics. My current research explores bilingual communication and its pedagogical impacts, particularly in linguistically diverse classrooms, and I actively publish in academic journals. I coordinate practicum placements for MA TESOL students and have received grants for my research in bilingual education.
