Anna Nikolaidou is a Senior Lecturer in Architecture at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol). She holds a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) and a Master of Architecture (MArch) with a specialization in Advanced Virtual Technological Architecture Research from the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London. In addition to her role at UWE Bristol, she has held positions as a Visiting Professor in Architecture at IE University in Spain and a Visiting Researcher at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, as well as the Institute of Colloid and Biointerface Science at BOKU University in Vienna. Anna is a member of the Unconventional Computing Laboratory at UWE Bristol. With extensive industry experience, she has worked with prominent design-led practices in architecture, including KCA International, MKV Design, Hartmann Designs, Gustafson Porter, and Foster + Partners. Her research interests are highly interdisciplinary and focus on biomaterials, biosensing, unconventional computing, digital fabrication, responsive building systems, and sustainable design. She is particularly engaged in developing biohybrid material systems that incorporate living microbial communities, enabling responsive and regenerative computing capabilities. Currently, Anna is researching the sensing and information processing functionalities of fungal and bacterial composites for wearable architectural applications, especially how these materials respond to environmental, chemical, and mechanical stimuli.
