Biography

Anna Shechtman is an Assistant Professor in Literatures in English at Cornell University, specializing in media studies and American literature. She is currently writing a two-volume history that explores media and data concepts in the United States. Her research examines the social formations and technologies that allow media to incorporate—and possibly supersede—the categories of art, literature, communication, and culture in the latter half of the 20th century. She critically challenges the notion of data as a proprietary domain for social scientists and addresses its improper importation into the study of literature from digital humanists. Her work has been published in prominent journals such as Critical Inquiry and Representations, and she contributes freelance essays and reviews to outlets like ArtForum, The New Yorker, and The New York Review of Books. She is also known for her monthly crossword puzzles in The New Yorker and has published a book titled "Riddles Sphinx: Inheriting Feminist History Crossword Puzzle" with HarperOne set to release in 2024.
