Biography

Anna Stilz is the Kernan Robson Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley. She holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University. Her research interests focus on history of political thought, particularly the works of Rousseau, Kant, Hegel, and Marx. She is also deeply engaged in democratic theory, examining concepts such as political obligation, authority, and state legitimacy. Her work addresses issues of rights, sovereignty, and territory, as well as ethics surrounding migration, borders, climate change, and climate justice. She explores theories of collective agency and responsibility. Stilz is the author of "Liberal Loyalty: Freedom, Obligation, State" (2009) and "Territorial Sovereignty: Philosophical Exploration" (2019), along with numerous journal articles in political philosophy. In 2024, she will serve as the Editor-in-Chief for "Philosophy & Public Affairs" and is the founding editor of "Free & Equal: Journal of Ethics & Public Affairs," an open-access journal launching in September 2024.
