Biography

Anna Torres-Cacoullos is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Illinois. She completed her Ph.D. in Spanish Literature at Pennsylvania State University in 2020, where she also received her M.A. and two B.A. degrees in Spanish and Comparative Literature. Her research interests focus on 20th and 21st-century Peninsular literature and film, with a particular emphasis on modernist and experimental literature, metafiction, and cinema media studies. Her current book project, 'Writing New Literacies: Film Culture Moving-Image Storytelling in Silver Age Spain (1896-1930),' explores the intersection of cinematic and literary narrative forms and how silent film influenced literary genres during early 20th-century Spain. She investigates how modernist writers redefined narrative expression in response to the rise of film culture and considers experimental methods of literary creation in a contemporary context. Her interdisciplinary approach merges literary studies, media studies, philosophy, and cultural studies, seeking to engage with the complexities of storytelling and audience interaction.
