Dr. Anne Maria Makhulu

Biography

Anne-Maria B. Makhulu is an Associate Professor at Duke University, where she teaches in the Department of Cultural Anthropology and the Department of African and African American Studies. Her research interests focus on Africa, particularly South Africa, cities, space, globalization, political economy, and neoliberalism. Makhulu has contributed significantly to the understanding of anthropological finance and corporations, along with aesthetic and literary questions related to South Africa. She has co-edited works such as "Hard Work, Hard Global" and has been involved in various projects that explore critical views on race and socioeconomic factors in her field. Makhulu's academic background includes a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and several years of training that have shaped her expertise in anthropology and cultural studies. She is recognized for her work addressing the pervasive racism and sexism within her discipline, advocating for greater diversity and inclusion.
