Dr. Anne Maria Makhulu

Biography

Anne-Maria Makhulu is an Associate Professor at Duke University, with dual appointments in the Department of Cultural Anthropology and the Department of African and African American Studies. She also serves as Core Faculty in Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Specializing in contemporary issues in South Africa, Makhulu's research interests include urban spaces, globalization, political economy, and the cultural dimensions of neoliberalism. Her academic contributions encompass a range of both co-edited and authored works. Notable among her publications are 'Hard Work, Hard Global Volatility: African Subjectivities' and 'Making Freedom: Apartheid, Squatter Politics, Struggle Home.' She has served as a guest editor for significant special issues examining the intersections of race, economy, and social mobility. In her latest research projects, she explores the post-apartheid landscape and the complexities of identity and movement in a transformed South Africa. Her scholarly engagement critically examines the impacts of historical legacies on present-day experiences.
