Dr. Anne Burns

Biography

Professor Anne Burns is a renowned expert in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). She began her professional journey as an English teacher in various countries, including France, Kenya, and Mauritius, where she established her own primary and junior high school, Alexandra House School. After relocating to Australia in the early 1980s, she worked for eight years with the New South Wales Adult Migrant English Service, focusing on helping newly arrived immigrants and refugees. In 1990, she joined the Department of Linguistics at Macquarie University in Sydney, contributing to the National Centre for English Language Teaching and Research as a Senior Lecturer and later as Associate Director. In 2003, she was appointed Chair Professor in the Department of Linguistics, also serving as the Dean of the Division of Linguistics and Psychology from 2000 to 2005. Her engagement in the academic community includes various honorary positions, board memberships, and involvement with international linguistic organizations. In July 2010, she became a Professor of TESOL at the School of Education at the University of New South Wales, where she continues to influence the field through research and education.
