Dr. Anne Fausto Sterling

Biography

Anne Fausto-Sterling is the Nancy Duke Lewis Professor Emerita at Brown University, specializing in Biology, Gender Studies, and Science and Technology Studies. With over 40 years on the Brown faculty, she has served as the past Chair of the Faculty Committee on Science & Technology Studies and has held visiting professor positions at several institutions worldwide. A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, she has received numerous grants and fellowships in the sciences and humanities. Her scholarly work focuses on developmental genetics, gender studies, and science studies, challenging entrenched scientific beliefs while engaging with the public. Her research applies dynamic systems theory to understand human development, specifically exploring the emergence of gender differences in behavior from early childhood. Fausto-Sterling’s influential work aims to bridge the gap between biological and social explanations for human differences, reframing conversations within academia and public discourse.
