Dr. Anne Galea

Biography

Anne Galea is an Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in the School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences. Her research primarily focuses on investigating the mechanisms of action of DNA-damaging anti-tumor drug cisplatin and related compounds. Her PhD projects explored interactions between anti-tumor drugs and DNA within reconstituted chromatin systems to understand gene expression responses in human cells undergoing drug treatments. She has made significant contributions to understanding how cisplatin influences chromatin structure and DNA damage, particularly investigating its binding preferences in nucleosome systems. Her findings emphasize the importance of nucleosome core proteins in modulating the reaction of cisplatin and its analogues with DNA, which has crucial implications for designing new anti-tumor drugs based on cisplatin. Additionally, her work includes gene expression profiling of human foreskin fibroblast cells treated with both clinically active and inactive isomers of cisplatin to clarify the molecular events that contribute to the drug's anti-tumor activity. Through her dual-fluor microarray experiments, Anne has identified distinct gene expression responses in treated cells, helping to elucidate potential new drug targets for improved cancer treatment.
