Dr. Anne Gershon

Biography

Anne Gershon, MD, is a Professor of Pediatrics at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. She graduated from Smith College and earned her medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr. Gershon has dedicated over 40 years to researching varicella zoster virus, particularly its epidemiology, diagnosis, immunology, latency, prevention, and treatment. Her groundbreaking studies include significant research on the safety and efficacy of the varicella vaccine, especially in leukemic children and adults. Dr. Gershon has authored over 350 publications and edited 14 books. Her esteemed career includes serving on various committees such as the American Academy of Pediatrics Infectious Diseases Committee and the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. She was the president of the Infectious Diseases Society of America in 2008-2009 and has received numerous awards, including the Distinguished Women Award from Smith College and the Lifetime Achievement Award from IDSA. Her research interests also encompass HIV infection in children, particularly opportunistic infections, and the cellular mechanisms behind latency and reactivation of the virus in the human gut. Dr. Gershon's contributions to the field have been monumental, leading to better understanding and treatment of VZV-related diseases.
