Biography

Anne Gordon is a Clinical Professor of Law at Duke University School of Law, where she directs the Externships program and teaches courses including the Life Design seminar, Social Justice Lawyering, and the Movement Lawyering Lab. A criminal defense attorney, Anne focuses on writing about professional identity, teaching pedagogy, and lawyering for social change, publishing two recent articles on equitable teaching practices and clinic design. She serves on the Executive Committee of the American Association of Law Schools’ Clinical Section and the National Board of the ACLU. In 2024, she was awarded a Fulbright fellowship to study experiential legal education in Madrid, Spain. Prior to her role at Duke Law, Anne taught at Berkeley Law School, where she helped lead the Appellate Advocacy Program and served as a Senior Research Fellow at the California Constitution Center. Additionally, she was a distinguished visiting professor at the Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey in Puebla, Mexico, where she instructed on professional skills and comparative constitutional law. Anne holds an A.B. from Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs and graduated cum laude from the University of Michigan Law School. Her career includes extensive work with refugees in Ethiopia, sex workers in Chicago, farmers in Cambodia, and separated families at the US-Mexico border.
