Professor La Forest received her LL.B. from the University of New Brunswick and her LL.M. from Cambridge University. She worked at the private practice firm Fraser & Beatty in Toronto before joining the Faculty of Law at Dalhousie University, where she was cross-appointed to the Department of Women's Studies. In 1996, she was appointed Dean at the University of New Brunswick Law and remained in that position until 2004. Additionally, she has served as a consultant and expert witness in matters of human rights, employment, property, and extradition law. La Forest has held various esteemed roles including member of the Nova Scotia Human Rights Tribunal and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, and was named Queen’s Counsel for the Province of New Brunswick in 2018.
