Anne Pitcher studies the comparative politics of developing countries, especially in Africa. Her current research examines party politics, bureaucratic institutions, and urban political economy, focusing on the provision of goods such as housing, water, electricity, and health care in authoritarian and democratic environments in Angola, Mozambique, Kenya, and South Africa. She has published over 30 journal articles and book chapters, and won the Dudley Seers Prize for her article in the Journal of Development Studies in 2017. Currently, she serves as co-editor with Kelly Askew for the book series "African Perspectives" at the University of Michigan Press and has been a past president of the African Studies Association.
