Biography

Anne Rebecca Solovej is a PhD fellow at the University of Copenhagen, specifically within the Department of Anthropology. Her research focuses on the humanitarian implications of border violence and control in the Mediterranean, particularly concerning Search and Rescue (SAR) operations. She investigates the ethical, moral, political, and emotional dilemmas faced by humanitarian rescuers involved in SAR activities in the Mediterranean context. Her project draws on ethnographic fieldwork with humanitarian SAR organizations in Sicily and NGO work in Berlin, contributing insights into the evolving nature of humanitarian practices in light of increasing border violence against migrants, including illegal pushbacks and human rights violations. The research aims to shed light on the understanding and negotiation of the 'humanitarian crisis' in the Mediterranean as it relates to SAR work.
