Biography

Anne Whitelaw joined the Department of Art History at Concordia University in January 2011, following 11 years as a faculty member in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Alberta. Her teaching expertise encompasses the history of visual culture in Canada, museum theory, exhibition historiography, and the history of advertising. Whitelaw's research delves into the intersections of art historiography and cultural institutions in Canada, particularly focusing on exhibition practices and the collection of art as a means of understanding nationhood. She has published extensively on the display of Canadian art at the National Gallery of Canada, including the integration of Aboriginal art into the permanent collections of national museums. Whitelaw is the author of 'Spaces Places Art: Making Art Institutions in Western Canada 1912-1990' (MQUP 2017) and co-editor of 'Visual Arts Canada: Twentieth Century' (Oxford University Press, 2010). She currently leads a SSHRC-funded partnership development grant examining the global circulation of objects in Northern North America. Her areas of expertise also include settler-colonial art history and the role of women in museums. Additionally, she has received several distinctions and grants for her research and teaching.
